WoW: Forever Hardcore — what's confirmed, and whether to wait for it

Hardcore is not in the game on 4 November. Blizzard's roadmap puts it in winter, with no date. Nothing you earn on another ruleset can follow you in, so waiting for it gains you nothing. Here is what is confirmed, what is only reported, and what nobody knows yet.

Hardcore is not there on launch night

Forever has four rulesets. On 4 November you can pick from three of them: Normal, PvP and Roleplaying. Hardcore comes later.

Blizzard says so in plain words: "Hardcore will be available sometime after launch." That is confirmed, from Blizzard's own article on rulesets. The press coverage of BlizzCon says the same thing.

Blizzard's one-line pitch for it is "for players seeking the ultimate challenge, where every decision matters and death carries lasting consequences." That is all the official description there is. The rest of this page covers what is actually known.

If you are still choosing between the three rulesets that open at launch, start with choosing a ruleset.

There is no date, only a season: winter

Blizzard has not given a date, but it has given a season. Its roadmap slide for 2026 and 2027, shown at BlizzCon, puts the Hardcore launch in winter: after the raids unlock on 9 December, and before the spring update. That is confirmed. The same slide says "content and timing subject to change".

The press said the same before the slide was widely read. This is reported:

    • Icy Veins: "not expected to arrive until early 2027".
    • PC Games Hardware (German) reports that Blizzard is saving it "für den Winter": for the winter.
    • Wowhead: the only thing said at BlizzCon was that it is coming "soon".
    • Warcraft Tavern: "We don’t know when that will be yet."

So the honest answer is: this winter, some time after 9 December, day unknown. Do not build plans around a day, because there is not one. When Blizzard names one, this page will change.

Hardcore is sealed off from the other three rulesets

Blizzard calls Hardcore "a fully enclosed ecosystem", and its rulesets article spells out what that means. All four points below are confirmed:

    • No grouping across rulesets. This applies to every ruleset, not just Hardcore: "Cross-ruleset grouping is not supported".
    • Battlegrounds stay separate too. Battlegrounds "may include players from other rulesets, with the exception of Hardcore, which remains separate."
    • Nobody moves in. "Players cannot freely hop between rulesets; to play under a different one, they’ll need to create a new character in that ruleset." Every Hardcore character will be a newly created one.
    • Both factions are allowed. Hardcore does not lock you to one side the way the PvP ruleset does.

What this means for you: the people you level with at launch cannot group with your Hardcore character unless they start on Hardcore too. A Hardcore group is a group that decides to start there together.

When a Hardcore character dies, it can move to any other ruleset

Confirmed by Blizzard: "if one dies, that character can transfer to another ruleset—including PvP."

Warcraft Tavern and Wowhead both covered the BlizzCon Hardcore panel. Both report that the choice is yours: Normal, PvP or Roleplaying. That detail is reported by them, but Blizzard's "another ruleset—including PvP" points the same way.

About the death itself: Blizzard's own words are "death carries lasting consequences". Its Forever articles do not say "one life". That phrase comes from Icy Veins, which calls Hardcore "a 1-life challenge". That is reported.

    Not published anywhere we found:

    • whether the transfer costs anything
    • what the character keeps when it moves: level, gear, gold
    • what happens to its guild

Do not fill those gaps with how other versions of Hardcore have worked. Forever is a new game, and nothing carries over to it by assumption.

What you earn on Hardcore comes out with you, but nothing goes in

Collections and Legacy Points are account-wide across Normal, PvP and Roleplaying. Hardcore is the exception, and only in one direction. Confirmed by Blizzard: "Progress, collections, and rewards earned in Hardcore can become available elsewhere, but progress from other rulesets will not flow back into Hardcore."

    In practice:

    • Legacy Points and collections you build at launch will not help a Hardcore character. It starts clean.
    • What you earn on Hardcore does reach the rest of your account. Blizzard's stated reason is to let players "carry accomplishments forward if they move out of it". That is what happens when a Hardcore character dies and transfers.
    • Hardcore has Legacy challenges of its own. Confirmed by Blizzard's Legacy article: "for Hardcore launch, we will have 12 new Legacy Challenges specific to the Hardcore experience." PvP challenges can't be completed there, and more Hardcore-specific challenges and perks are planned. The full picture is in Legacy Points and collections.

A warning before the world refreshes: the one safeguard reported so far

Wowhead and Warcraft Tavern both covered the BlizzCon Hardcore panel. Both report that when the world is about to refresh around you, the game warns you first so you can get somewhere safe. Warcraft Tavern adds that this applies to every version of the game, not only Hardcore.

This is reported. It is not in Blizzard's written articles.

Not known: how much warning you get. No reliable source gives a length.

Beyond this warning, we found no published rules for Forever's Hardcore: nothing on disconnects, nothing on what counts as a death, and nothing on whether lost characters are ever restored. When Blizzard publishes the rules, they will be listed here.

The decision: play at launch, because waiting gains your Hardcore character nothing

Put the confirmed facts together and the answer is simple:

    1. You cannot make a Hardcore character until Hardcore opens.
    2. A character you make at launch can never become a Hardcore character. To play Hardcore you "need to create a new character in that ruleset."
    3. Nothing you earn on another ruleset flows into Hardcore.

So waiting gains you nothing for Hardcore, and playing at launch costs it nothing.

The months before Hardcore opens are also the best preparation you can get. In Wowhead's account of the panel, "Knowing the World is a big part of Hardcore", and Forever is the developers' chance to "shake up leveling and make things more or less dangerous". Learn what changed on a character that is allowed to die.

What to hold back: a name. Blizzard confirms that full names are unique per region. Blizzard Watch reports that this holds across all four rulesets, Hardcore included. If that is right, a name you give a launch character is a name your Hardcore character can never have. And keeping a name unused does not reserve it: anyone on any ruleset can take it in the meantime. Warcraft Tavern reports that a name stays with a character when it transfers, so a Hardcore character that dies keeps its name on its new ruleset. More in names and language.
