WoW: Forever Legacy Points and collections — what follows you, and what doesn't

Your Legacy Points are shared by every non-Hardcore character on your account, whichever ruleset it plays on. The perks you buy with them are not: each character spends its own, at most 16 at launch. And Hardcore lets progress out without letting any in.

Earn your first Legacy Point, then know where the other 64 come from

Legacy is Forever's account-wide progression. You complete Legacy Challenges, each worth one Legacy Point; you spend the points on Legacy Perks; and your running total unlocks Legacy Rewards. All of that is from Blizzard's own explainer.

The panel opens when you earn your first point. For most people that is a character reaching level 25. Reaching 150 in a non-gathering primary tradeskill, or exploring the entire world map, also does it. After that it is the shield on the menu, or Y by default.

Blizzard's count is 65 challenges in six categories, one point each:

    Category Points What earns them
Classes 27 Each class to level 25, 45 and 60
    Tradeskills 18 Each non-gathering primary profession to 150, 225 and 300
Player vs. Player 12 PvP ranks 3, 7, 10, 13 and 14; Exalted with each battleground reputation; weeks 4, 7 and 10 of the Field of Honor PvP Season's Journey
Adventure 2 Explore the entire world map on one character; complete the Lord Valthalak dungeon set questline
Dungeons 3 The final boss of every dungeon in the 15–25, 26–45 and 46–60 bands
Raids 3 Onyxia; all 13 Hyjal Summit bosses; all 8 Barrow Deeps bosses

Read the first two rows carefully. The challenge is per class and per profession, not per character. A second Warrior adds nothing to the Classes row; a first Mage adds three. Gathering professions are not on the list at all.

Understand the split: points are shared, perks are per character

This is the line to read before you make an alt. In Blizzard's words, "Legacy Points are shared across all alts, while each character spends those points separately in their own trees."

So a new character starts with the whole account's points to spend and buys its own perks with them. Nothing is copied from your main. Your gatherer can take Bountiful Harvest (more materials from mining, herbalism and skinning) while your levelling alt takes Well Rested (faster rested experience, higher cap).

Each character can spend at most 16 points at launch, however many the account holds. The trees are Professions, Adventure and Resourcefulness, and Blizzard expects to raise the cap and add trees over time.

Can one character reach 16 on its own? Blizzard puts the single-character maximum at 29, but 12 of those are PvP points. Leave PvP out and the ceiling is 17. Leave the raids out as well and it is 14, two short. The quickest way to close that gap is a character of a different class: taking it to level 25 is a point, and if your main is not on Hardcore, that point reaches it whichever ruleset the alt plays on.

Keep earning past 16 — the rewards count what you earn, not what you spend

The cap limits spending, not earning. Blizzard: "Players can still continue completing challenges beyond that spending limit and earn up to 65 Legacy Points at the start."

Those points accumulate on the account and unlock rewards. Blizzard names four at launch, with more planned for each content update:

    • Replica Ironforge Air Rifle, a toy
    • Spectral Bear Cub, a pet
    • Spectral Bear Tabard
    • Reins of the Spectral Bear, a mount

Blizzard describes them as cosmetic or prestige rewards with no competitive advantage.

Reported: Warcraft Tavern puts the thresholds at 15, 25, 40 and 55 points, and says you "head to Innkeeper Wiley in Ratchett to get your reward". Blizzard has not published either.

An early hands-on report from BlizzCon read this track as counting the points you spend. Blizzard's own explainer says points accumulate on your entire account, and Warcraft Tavern says the same. Go by that.

Know what crosses Normal, PvP and Roleplaying — and what never does

Confirmed by Blizzard: "Collections and Legacy Points remain account-wide across rulesets, with Hardcore as the exception." Normal, PvP and Roleplaying share one pool.

So Legacy is not a reason to pick one of those three over another, and it is not a cost of spreading characters across them. If you do end up with a Mage on Roleplaying and a Warrior on PvP, both feed the same points and both can spend them.

What does not cross is people. Blizzard is just as plain that "cross-ruleset grouping is not supported". Your points travel between rulesets; your friends do not. Choose the ruleset for who you play with, and let Legacy follow you.

Collections. Blizzard has not published a list of what "Collections" covers. The one it describes in detail is transmog appearances, and the useful part is that turning transmog off does not stop you collecting: "players can continue collecting appearances from new gear in case they decide to use transmog later."

    Unknown:

    • Whether any of this crosses regions. Blizzard says "Battle.net account-wide" and does not mention regions.
    • Whether gold, reputation, profession skill or anything else that belongs to a character is shared. We have found nothing that says so. Plan as though it stays with the character that earned it.

Plan for Hardcore separately — progress flows out of it, never in

Hardcore is not available at launch. When it arrives, Blizzard has already said how Legacy works there:

    • Nothing goes in. "Legacy Challenges completed in non-Hardcore rulesets will not show up in Hardcore." Points earned on Normal, PvP or Roleplaying do not help a Hardcore character.
    • Everything comes out. A challenge earned on Hardcore is granted in all other rulesets, and progress, collections and rewards earned there can become available elsewhere.
    • No PvP challenges. They cannot be completed on Hardcore, so Hardcore gets 12 challenges of its own when it launches.
    • Death does not cost the account its progress. A Hardcore character that dies can transfer to another ruleset, and Blizzard describes the design as "letting players carry accomplishments forward if they move out of it."

For planning: if Hardcore is where you mean to end up, nothing you earn elsewhere before it opens will be there waiting. If you play both, Hardcore is the only ruleset whose Legacy progress counts everywhere.

Clear every dungeon in each level band — three points you cannot solo

Blizzard's three dungeon challenges are the final boss of every level 15–25 dungeon, every 26–45 dungeon and every 46–60 dungeon. One point per band.

The word that costs time is every. Warcraft Tavern's reading of the beta panel (reported, and the list may change before launch) puts original dungeons and Forever's new ones in the same bands, and lists Scarlet Monastery's wings one by one. A band is a long list, not a handful.

Unknown: whether every clear in a band has to be on the same character. Blizzard says "on the same character" for the exploration challenge and does not say it for dungeons.

This is the part of Legacy that needs other people. A group posted as "the last dungeon I need for the 26–45 band" is a much easier ask than "LFG", and it tells the right people why it matters to you.

Kill every boss in each raid — the raid points are full clears

The three raid points are Onyxia, all 13 Hyjal Summit bosses and all 8 Barrow Deeps bosses. The dungeon points ask only for final bosses; a raid point is a full clear. A raid that skips a boss for time has not earned anyone the point.

The two new raids are not there on day one: a developer interview puts them one month after launch. Blizzard's Legacy list is the best evidence yet that Onyxia is in Forever at all; when she is available has not been published.
