Scarlet Monastery — four wings, one courtyard, and a key in a chest

One entrance leads to four separate instances spanning roughly twenty levels, and the key to the locked ones is in a chest rather than on a boss. The mistakes here cost a group its evening, not its repair bill.

    It is four instances, not one dungeon

    Everything about planning a Scarlet Monastery run follows from this: one courtyard, four separate instances, each with its own entrance portal, its own lockout and its own level range.

    • Graveyard — the lowest, and the one most groups do first.
    • Library — where the key is.
    • Armory — a short wing with one boss worth the trip.
    • Cathedral — the highest, and the longest.

    A group that says "let's do SM" has not yet decided anything. The wing is the decision, and four people who each assumed a different one is the most common way this run falls apart before it starts.

    Our level bands per wing are on each wing's own page — they are spread across roughly twenty levels, so a group that fits Graveyard may be well under Cathedral.

    The Scarlet Key is in a chest, not on a boss

    This is the fact worth knowing before anything else:

    "This item drops from the static chest (Doan's Strongbox) behind the final boss, Arcanist Doan, in the Library wing of the Scarlet Monastery in Tirisfal Glades."

    A chest, behind the last boss, in the Library. Three consequences:

    1. It is not a random drop. A static chest is there every run, so one Library clear gets a key for anyone who opens it. Nobody has to run it five times hoping.
    2. You have to finish the Library. Doan is the last boss, so this is a full wing, not a smash-and-grab.
    3. Everyone who wants one should be in that group. This is the planning point — a Library run where four people need the key is one evening; four separate Library runs is four.

    It opens "the most heavily-guarded areas claimed by the Scarlet Crusade" — which is the next step, and the one our sources disagree about.

    Which doors it opens — and why we are telling you the disagreement

    Warcraft Wiki's Classic-specific page says the key is "the master key to the most heavily-guarded areas claimed by the Scarlet Crusade - the Armory and Cathedral wings of the Scarlet Monastery."

    Warcraft Tavern's Classic guide says something different: "The Armory and Library portals are behind locked doors that can only be opened with The Scarlet Key, which is obtained inside the Library wing from a chest behind the last boss, Arcanist Doan."

    Those cannot both be right, and the second one contradicts itself: if the Library door needed the key, you could not reach the chest that holds the key.

    We follow the wiki — Armory and Cathedral — for that reason, and because it is the Classic-specific page rather than a guide covering several versions at once. But we are not certain, and a page that hid the disagreement would be pretending to be.

    What to do about it, which is the same either way: get the key from the Library before you plan an Armory or Cathedral night. It is needed for at least one of them on both accounts, it costs one wing to obtain, and arriving without it is the failure this whole page exists to prevent.

    What this page deliberately leaves out

    Boss abilities, loot tables and quest chains. Wowhead has them, they are better at it, and every activity page here links out for exactly that. This page covers the things that decide whether your evening works: which wing, who needs the key, and what order.

    Per-wing level ranges from Classic guides. Warcraft Tavern's Classic guide gives recommended levels per wing, and they do not match the Forever ranges our registry carries. Rather than print two sets of numbers and let a reader pick, each wing's page shows the Forever figure with its source. If beta shows those moving, the registry changes and every page follows.

    Anything about the Mists of Pandaria version. Warcraft Wiki's main Scarlet Monastery article describes the two-wing redesign, not the four-wing original — the same retail-tense trap the attunements page warns about. Nothing from it is used here.
